Abstract

This article presents a Portuguese translation of the collection of poems Castalia Bárbara (1899) by Bolivian poet Ricardo Jaimes Freyre. As part of the South American modernist movement, Jaimes Freyre was inspired by Norse mythology to write this work. The text translated here shows how Jaimes Freyre uses Scandinavian landscapes, symbols, myths, and gods to give his poems the exoticism, imagery, and aesthetics typical of modernist works. To this end, a translation was made as close as possible to the original in Spanish to reproduce Jaimes Freyre’s style in Portuguese, followed by an analysis focused on the elements that gave it form and essence and made these poems something new for the South American context of the time.
