MAJŪS – OS ATAQUES VIKINGS AO AL-ANDALUS, ENTRE OS SÉCS. IX-X, E O SEU IMPACTO NO ĠARB AL-ANDALUS

Abstract

In 844 Lisbon warns Córdoba of the approach of ships. This moment marks the beginning of the Viking incursions in al-Andalus. Far beyond from being just traumatic and destructive events, the majūs' offensives will be a turning point in the history of Ġarb al-Andalus, the western region of the Muslim Iberian Peninsula, until then marginalized, and only nominally controlled by the central power of Córdoba. The Viking incursions turn out to be an impetus for the urban and commercial development of the region, in addition to the creation of a navy – until then non-existent –, and respective combat techniques, providing the tools for the formation of a Muslim naval hegemony in the Atlantic Ocean, than only the territorial regression of the XIIth and XIIIth centuries., in favor of Portugal, will come to put into question. With this study, we will seek to analyze the direction taken by the incursions, a matter on which there is still no consensus today and, mainly, to understand the dramatic influence that these incursions had in shaping of the future of the western part of al-Andalus.
