The influence of classical culture on Osip Mandelstam (1891–1938), one of the foremost poets of the so-called Silver Age of Russian literature in the early 20th century, is well known. Far less studied, however, are the Germanic and Nordic elements that resonate throughout his poetry. In particular, his poems When on the Squares and in the Cloistered Peace (1917) and The Telephone (1918) contain striking allusions to Valhalla and Ragnarök—motifs that this study seeks to translate and analyze.
