Abstract

This paper examines the relevance of the occupational status of family´s head (self-employed or employed with a formal contract) on the probability of child labor of kids between 10 and 16 years. We tested whether these two forms of integration of family´s head in the labor market generate different patterns of use of child labour. Through the decomposition method of Yun (2000) analyzed the differential probability of children labor under the personal variables of children, the family´s head and variables related to families and the region. The results show that a non-negligible portion of the difference in the occurrence of child labor among children from families under the responsibility of a self-employed or an employee with a formal contract is due precisely to the intrinsic characteristics of the occupational status of responsible family.
