Abstract

The impacts of the automotive plants’ inauguration in two locations are investigated: Goiana (PE) and Iracemápolis (SP). Both manufacturing units were set up in the context of the Inovar-Auto, in territories with little or no industrial tradition. This is a comparative research, supported by quantitative data from the Relação Anual de Informações Sociais [Annual Report of Social Information] (Rais) and the Cadastro Geral de Emprego e Desemprego [General Register of Employed and Unemployed Persons] (CAGED) both from the extincted Ministry of Labor. The data were treated in a descriptive and comparative way. Among the categories of analysis, the following were included: i. economic and social indicators; ii. labor market characteristics; and iii. occupational structure. The results allow us to conclude that the impact on the labour market was more intensely noticed in the unit located in Pernambuco’s territory, highlighting as important factors: the enterprise size and the productive model chosen.
