Abstract

The objective of this article is to analyze the perceptions of young people – workers and union leaders – in relation to unions, observing the different perspectives between both of them and also according to the kind of occupational insertion and the centrality of work in their lives. Our methodological choice was qualitative research, considered more appropriate to the proposed objective. There were done 25 semi-structured interviews, nine of them with young leaders of CUT and 16 with young workers of the metallurgical and the telephonic sector from the RMPA. The conclusions revelead, on the one hand, criticism from young workers of union action, difficulty in bringing young people and unions together, and resistance to traditional forms of participation, but also pointed to the recognition of the importance of unions as a social and regulatory force in work relations. Such conclusions elucidate the challenges posed to the unions by young workers, who demand effective integration of them.
