Bilingual accessible cartoons for the inclusion

Abstract

In order for the ideological values and social criticism impregnated in the cartoons to be appreciated and explored also by people with visual impairments, they need to be made accessible. That is, its verbal content needs to be read and the imagetic content translated into words, through the intersemiotic translation mode known as audio description or AD. To ensure that audio description fulfills its role in building users' mental image, consulting by a visually impaired person is essential. In order to reach a wider audience and explore the multiple potentials of audio description, we present the accessible bilingual cartoons project, available on Instagram and in the Facebook, through the accounts @chargesacessiveis and Galeria Virtual de Charges Acessíveis, respectively, in which the cartoons have audio description in Portuguese and in English.

Author Biographies

DEISE MONICA MEDINA SILVEIRA, Instituto Federal da Bahia

She holds a Ph.D. in Education from the Federal University of Bahia, a Master's Degree in Letters and Linguistics from the Federal University of Bahia and a degree in Letters with an English Language from the Jorge Amado University Center (UNIJORGE). She is an English Language teacher at the IFBA, Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology. She is the coordinator of the research group on Linguistic Studies, Translation and Accessibility-LINTRA, at IFBA. Her areas of interest are Translation Studies, Social Semiotics and Multimodality, Audiovisual Translation and Accessibility. Her research focuses on the areas of audio description of static images and SDH (Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing). She works as an audio describer and subtitler since 2008.

Mr. Felipe Monteiro, State University of Rio de Janeiro

Master's student in Education, culture and communication in urban outskirts at UERJ, State University of Rio de Janeiro. Specialist in Accessible Audiovisual Translation: audio description from UECE, State University of Ceará, and in Cultural Accessibility from UFRJ, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Pedagogue and degree in Art Education/Music.
