Abstract

The archives of the universities have in their care essential documents created in the course of teaching, research and extension. These documents are witness to the memory of the institution and may be a research resource for students, teachers, historians, researchers, and others. In this sense, the archive is custodian of the university institutional memory. This article aims to reflect on the archives of Brazilian universities and their role in the preservation of documentary heritage and promoting the memory of the institution. In this sense, we sought to review the main authors who discuss the topic as well as current actions on behalf of the university archives.

Franciele Simon Carpes, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria

Mestre em Patrimônio Cultural na Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (2013). Especialista em Gestão em Arquivos pela Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (2010). Possui graduação em Arquivologia pela Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (2008). Atualmente é arquivista da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria.

Daniel Flores, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria

Doutor em "Metodologías y Líneas de Investigación en Biblioteconomía y Documentación" - Universidad de Salamanca/España em 2006. Mestrado em Engenharia de Produção pela UFSM. Especialista em Organização de Arquivos pela USP Universidade de São Paulo em 1998. Bacharel em Arquivologia em 1998, pela UFSM. Atualmente atua como Professor Adjunto do Departamento de Documentação da UFSM.
