Abstract

It is a bibliographic revision related to the strategic management in the departments in charge of the information organization units responsible to catalogue, classify and organize indexes, based on the viewpoint of the Approach Structure, Behavior and Performance – ECP of Porter (1998) and on the View Based in Resources – VBR of Prahalad and Hamel (1998). Generally it was concluded that it is essential the adoption of a strategic system in these departments that shall reflect in the catalogues, bibliographic registers, search mechanisms, access to and use of information and generation of knowledge, that could propitiate  an improvement in the positioning of the information units. It is emphasized the importance of establishing objectives towards answering the individuals´  the informational requirements , as well as give visibility and to maintain the organizational competitiveness to justify the survival of the information units in a competitive market.
