Abstract

Discusses extension activities in universities and their contribution to the training of Library Science studentes. Examines some theoritical and metho-dological premises which demonstrate the current tendency to view university extension programs as part of the professional education process, alongside teaching and research.Amongst the various types of extension activities the most important is practical work experience, within or outside the curriculum, because it brings together university and institutions. Extension activities permit the university to fulfil its role in the transformation of society and give it improved public credibility. Students discover the reality of working in their profession and become aware of the commitment they have to society, amongst other benefits. For these reasons extension activities are being seen by Library Schools as important elements in professional education programs.
