Abstract

In the context of the information society, the school needs to learn to incorporate the languages of cyberspace into those spaces occupied by the construction of knowledge with the objective of strengthening citizenship. In order to validate the arguments presented, this text is inspired in bibliographic analysis and research carried out with teachers from public schools in the city of João Pessoa, in the Northeast region of Brazil, with the purpose of verifying how primary school teachers are dealing with this process. The teacher of the first phase of primary education exercises an essential role as a catalyst in a dynamic of learning interwoven with the modern computer world. From the teachers' representations it is clear that it is necessary to know how to use technological tools mechanically and also how to read them critically; it is necessary to pay attention to the contents transmitted by information, how they are transmitted and who learns them. From this we deduce that traditional and digital literacy go hand in hand as means for the liberation from dependency on others. The study also revealed that effective transformation of the current state of teacher performance will only take place by means of transformations in scientific, public and political investments destined for this formation.
