Abstract

This article sets out to identify the situation of school libraries in teaching establishments of public and private primary and secondary school networks. To make possible the collection of the necessary data, we applied a questionnaire to a sample of directors from selected schools, and a form to those responsible for libraries or reading rooms, as well as using observation. When the results obtained were analysed and discussed, they allowed us to conclude that the situation of public and private school libraries is chaotic. If the population of João Pessoa is not to be punished for the consequences of the situation, it is important to warn all that the school is an organisation which offers services and if these are not up to standard complaints ought to be made so that this situation does not persist.
