VIVÊNCIAS URBANAS: FESTAS E VIDA COTIDIANA NA VILA DE CAMPANHA DA PRINCESA - MINAS GERAIS (SÉCULO XIX)

Abstract

This article discusses issues related to urban life and everyday life from the analysis of the public celebrations occurring in the Village of Campaign Princess, in Minas Gerais, in the first half of the nineteenth century. We seek to reflect on the relations of sociability established between social groups, the concern with urban planning policies and actions established by the City Council. Campanha da Princesa small town, the oldest in southern Minas Gerais, like other mining towns, emerged as a result of auriferous discoveries. High village in 1798, by a Queen Mary I’s decree, became one of the most significant urban centers of the nineteenth century, noted for its participation in the political elite of the Brazilian Empire, as well as significant local and regional economic integration, since it was located in a strategic region between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, making source supplying these squares and of the province of Minas Gerais. Thus, it becomes important to understand how the practices festive allow understanding the urban lifestyles, as well as policy guidelines binding to a political project of nation-building and national identity.
