Abstract

This article analyzes the treatment given, in the game Bioshock Infinite and its two DLCs (2013), to the character Daisy Fitzroy and the Vox Populi group, as well as the controversies arising from such treatment. From a semiotic point of view, this article analyzes the use of the hero's journey as a narrative model for the game and argues that the use of this model hinders the discussion proposed by the game – about racism and the limits of violence – because the mythical model is itself used by totalitarian ideology and, therefore, averse to such problematizations. The article also suggests that, as a way of mitigating such narrative model problems, other models can be used, such as the canonical narrative schema, or even visual storytelling tactics and multiple characters.

Renato Razzino Ernica, São Paulo University (USP)

Renato Razzino holds a Master's and Doctorate in Modern Language from the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences of the University of São Paulo (FFLCH - USP). He was a member of the CS:Games study group - Semiotic Research Group on the Language of Games, linked to the Graduate Program in Intelligence Technologies and Digital Design at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (TIDD / PUC-SP). 

Leonardo Reitano, University of São Paulo (USP)

Undergraduate professor at the Department of Computer Science at Faculdade das Américas - FAM, focusing on graduation in Game Design. PhD student in Semiotics and General Linguistics at the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences - FFLCH-USP, also holding a Master's degree in Semiotics and General Linguistics at the same institution, with a master's scholarship from CNPq.
