Power of information, interface with the user, guardian of knowledge, are the principal metaphors of the orifession permeating the social representations that university librarians construct in images of themselves and the other. The research made use of Roger Chartier´s concept of representation and the distinction beteween representation and represented given thet the representations of librarians are by supposition in a field of competencies and competition in which the challenges are announced in terms of power, domination and professional identification.
