Abstract

This paper points to the difficulties experienced by researchers and information professionals while a survey on Brazilian theses and dissertations was conducted. This type of search for publications was chosen because, in general, these materials can be legally and freely accessed online. The survey has begun with the consultation of online database of thesis and dissertations. Despite the fact that free access is a regular practice within the academic community, many hindrances were found in the process of obtaining information from existing sources. In order to enhance survey methodology, a complementary research was carried out in the Lattes Platform - regarded as another valuable source of survey on published scientific and technological production, from names of authors of collected publications. The present report also points to the necessity of organizing a centralized and well structured networked digital library of thesis and dissertations on all national scientific production, such as the Brazilian Digital Library of Thesis and Dissertations (BDTD), linked to the Brazilian Institute of Science and Technology (BIST).
