Philosophic ghosts: Some remarks on the "clandestine manuscripts"

Abstract

Many philosophic manuscripts appear and spread discreetly in the eighteenth century, but all are not so dangerous and, globally, they are not seen as very threatening by the State, by the police, and the defenders of the Christianity, even if they are sometimes described as « children of the darkness » or « infernal » productions. The printed « bad books », which are widely spread, also seem more real (symbolically) and more dangerous : however, maybe it was an error to believe it and not to be afraid of ghosts.
