Abstract

This paper aims to describe the variations of the retroflex phoneme /R/ in the towns of Itaguara and Itaúna, both located in the Central-West region of Minas Gerais, in Brazil. This study is theoretically sustained by the linguistic policy perspective defended by Spolsky (2004, 2009, 2012). The author defines language policy based upon three dimensions: practices, beliefs and language management. It is evinced that the linguistic choices of the speakers in those two towns corroborate Spolsky (2009), according to which, out of the three dimensions that define linguistic policy, practices have proven to be the strongest one. Moreover, language practices and beliefs present, especially in Itaguara, a rather relevant convergence for the linguistic studies.
