Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze under the theoretical umbrella of International Political Economy (EPI), that is, by the relationship between economy and politics, wealth and power, state and market, the issue of integration as an instrument for the development of nations. We will address the theoretical tendencies of liberalism (functionalism, neofunctionalism, institutionalism and open regionalism) and nationalism (realism, developmentalism and strategic trade). The article will be divided into two parts, plus an introduction and conclusion. In the first, we will critically analyze the liberal view of integration and its maxims, such as the “positive sum game” and others. In the second, we will investigate the realistic perspective of integration.
