The Far-Right and Islamophobia:
A case study of the spanish Vox party and its anti-muslim stance
Abstract
This article deals with the position of the Spanish Far Right, taking the Vox party as an example, against immigrants of Muslim origin and Islamic or Arab culture, who were present in Europe even before the formulation of the nation-states, in medieval times. Currently, the term issued for these actions is defined as “Islamophobia”, and it has gained strength after the attack on the twin towers in the United States on September 11, 2001. Thus, for the construction of the research, a qualitative understanding was essential through literature review including knowledges about the history of Islamophobia in Europe and its current forms, as well as analyze the Far Right ideology main characteristics, in an attempt to draw a parallel between them, confirmed by the connection of xenophobic and racial issues used by the Vox party as one of its most relevant political landmarks in his speeches and performance in Spain.
