The objective of this study is to examine Diderot´s writings on the inconsistencies within the perspectives of God-as-political and God-as-moral. First, it draws from Romano (1996), Grosrichard (1996) and Souza (2002) to undertake an analysis that reveals various interpretations of Diderot´s characteristically eclectic and antidogmatic body of work. Next, the study presents Diderot´s analysis of the political aspect of the idea of God in Philosophical Thoughts (1762). Subsequently, it explores his thoughts on the idea of God as interpreted in the moral plane in Addendum to the Journey of Bougainville, or dialogue between A and B (1772). The study concludes by both questioning the foundations of a civilization based on a particular religious belief and responding to those that defend a civilization rooted in secularism.
