Reading the world and reality might appear to be a frightening and traumatic process, hence a necessary one if we wish to see effective social transformation. With a profound attention to the implications that the intersections of race, gender and class imprinted in her experience, bell hooks engages deeply in this theoretical and analytical process, with the will to invent a way of surviving the oppressions imposed on her, while also communicating with wide audiences (hooks, 2015). In this article, beyond recognizing the feminist mark of hooks’ legacy, we observe the creation of her written voice in relation to popular culture, which she always references in her writing. In order to foster the exercise of thinking, the intellectual proposes we turn to culture, in conversation and contact with its influence on people who inhabit the margins, as a means of accessing themes and discourses which need reflection in order for a transformation to take place in a society that, in spite of being anti-intellectual, is actually hungry for insurgent writing and thought.
