Abstract

This article presents Francesco Geminiani’s ideas regarding the execution of musical ornamentation. In his opinion, ornamentation must be used by the performer as a tool capable of moving the audience. Since the relationship between ornamentation and emotion are rarely explored by the historical performance practice, we will focus on this aspect here. There is no intention to deal with, or to describe the multiple meanings of symbols, nor to make any kind of comparison between symbols employed by other composers and their respective execution. The intention is to deal with the emotional content.
Keywords: Ornamentation. Emotion. Emotional apprehension.
