Abstract

João Pessoa (Capital of the Brazilian State of Paraíba) is the third oldest city in Brazil. Considering the Portuguese colonization model, it is to be thought that its urban and social development, even though slow, might have included music in the different religious and/or liturgical activities. In the same way, non-ecclesiastical musical activities (at theaters, plazas, chambers or simply at home) might have shown a similar development. This article proposes possible ways and models to allow the development of Musicology throughout the State of Paraíba, by means of a coordinated action from its capital city toward the in-land, focusing not only on integration into the map of Brazilian music history - which is presently being rebuilt, but also into the web of academic production in musicology, through the location, treatment and recovering of its historical musical documents.
Keywords: Paraíba. Historical musicology. Musical archivology. Musical patrimony.
