Resumen

The city of Recife, capital of the state of Pernambuco, in Northeastern Brazil, was in the 1990's the birthplace of a musical movement known as ‘manguebeat’. The musicians and bands related to this movement share a common search for mixing international genres (like rock, punk and hip-hop) and local expressions (like maracatu and coco). In this article, the specific choices made by some "mangue" musicians in order to create new music from such local and global influences, and how these choices relate to prevailing views about "Brazilian popular music" are discussed. The two cases chosen are those of Chico Science and Sérgio "Siba" Veloso. Keywords: Music and globalization. Popular music in Pernambuco (Brazil). Manguebeat. Chico Science. Siba Veloso.
