Intersectionality and the crossroads of structural identities in communicative interactions

This paper offers a dialogue between the intersectional approach and the relational model of Communication, discussing how the structural identity categories of privilege and subalternity interact and intersect, complexifying social relations. In order to do so, I discuss some contributions from Black feminist thought in the development of intersectionality, showing the insufficiency of the single-axis approach to apprehend the ways in which such power categories permeate society. The paper argues that intersectionality, precisely for centering how the power axes emerge in people’s experiences in their social lives, can offer a resourceful analytical framework to comprehend the interactions between subjects; forms of representation, cultural production and media narratives; and the background that sets social relations.
