Abstract

This article proposal aims to analyze certain discourses of contemporary figures of the Brazilian right and how they capture their audiences more through the mobilization of values than through informational content. Among the objectives, is also to understand a little better what are the discursive “strategies” that try to legitimize fallacies and absurd theories. For this, we chose as corpus some speeches by the self-styled philosopher Olavo de Carvalho. We chose a video by Olavo de Carvalho, posted on YouTube on September 15, 2019. As a theoretical foundation, we took as a basis the notions of: sociodiscursive imaginaries by Charaudeau (2007); social constructionism; coordination normativity; and some discussions about the transgressive character of the new right addressed by Angela Nagle (2017). We observed in the analyzed speeches that pathos seems to be the privileged rhetorical dimension to the detriment of logos. Values and beliefs replace objective reasons.
