This article aims to analyze the Brazilian slavery period, which runs until 1888, based on the three Machado stories: O caso da Vara, Mariana and Pai contra Mãe, which are narrated in the nineteenth century which, despite the different stories, the narrations they are concerned with denouncing the horrors of slavery, during or after its end. This work seeks to bring Brazilian literature to the debate as an indispensable element in the social and historical analysis of the country, capable of bringing new information and provoking reflection on different subjects. Therefore, this study is bibliographic in nature and is based on Bosi (1975), Priore and Venancio (2016), Marquese (2006) and Oliveira (2019). We hope, however, to contribute to the debate about ethnic-racial themes and literary reading as an essential modality for the development of historical knowledge and for the deconstruction of prejudiced mentalities.
