The article examines the notion of intellectual intuition [Intellektuelle Anschauung] in Fichte, highlighting the differences from the brief mentions found in Kantian philosophy, particularly in the “Dissertation of 1770” and the letter to Marcus Herz (1772). Additionally, it shows how Fichte transforms this concept in his own philosophy. In this context, Hölderlin's fragment Urteil und Sein is an important early reception of Fichte's Wissenschaftslehre (1794/95), as it considers the factum of consciousness as determined by Kantian philosophy. From Hölderlin's critique, we analyze how Fichte responds to the objections raised against his work of 1794/95 in the “Essay on a New Exposition of 1797”. We conclude that Fichte does not intend to break with the letter [Buchstabe] of Kant, but often reconfigures the meaning of words to promote new theoretical development. By uncovering the problem of the self and self-consciousness, this reconfiguration proves fundamental for the advancement of this issue.
