FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY FOR DAILY INSTRUMENTAL LIFE ACTIVITIES OF PNEUMOPATHIC ELDERLY PERSONS ATTENDED IN A HOSPITAL IN THE AMAZON

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the functional capacity to instrumental activities of daily life of elderly people with respiratory diseases. Methods: Descriptive, cross-sectional, observational study. The sample was composed of elderly patients attended at the respiratory physiotherapy outpatient clinic of a university hospital located in Belém, Pará, Amazon, Brazil, who were evaluated for their general health conditions and classified as dyspnea according to the Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scale (MRC) and at the level of functionality according to the Lawton and Brody (LB) index. Results: We evaluated 27 elderly people, of both genders, with a mean age of 69.96 ± 7.56 years, had pulmonary emphysema (55.5%). The most significant of the sample presented dyspnea (81.4%), with a prevalent MRC score of three. The mean score reached by the sample in the LB was 16.89 ± 2.29, characterizing them as partially dependent for performing instrumental activities of daily life. There was a weak correlation between the MRC and the LB index and inverted correlation when LB was associated with the age of the volunteers. Conclusion: The elderly showed only a slight deficit in their functional capacity. For this sample, this deficit seems to be related to the advancement of the age of the volunteers and not to the symptoms related to the presented pneumopathies.
