Abstract

Since your arrival to the West in the mid-twentieth century, the practice of Yoga has attracted attention from various segments of contemporary society. However, the discourses produced in the West about this practice is considerably distanced from the ancient India pattern. From the analysis of verbal and visual texts examples, conveyed by the print media, we seek in this work to understand the genesis of Western discursive representations about Yoga: what are the clues that allow us to retrace the path that these historical and discursive representations followed, from the Vedic tradition to reach into our daily lives? Of course we do not intend to exhaust the possibilities of analyzing the issue in this article, but noted, above all, a proposed approach of it, through some key concepts of discourse analysis (French school), such as “interdiscourse” (Pêcheux, 1975) and “simulacrum” (Maingueneau, 1984).
