Abstract

The text points to the creation of the Mourides black Muslim brotherhood in Western Africa and its legacy, expressed, among others, by the religious celebration called Grand Magal of Touba, held annually on the 18th day of Safar (second month of the Muslim calendar). This religious beyond the teachings transmitted by orality, also the records in thousands of pages kept in the Muslim library in the city of Touba - Senegal, among these records are the khassidas, memorized and professed books during the Magal. These records also compose the learning in the Quranic schools. This celebration has crossed geographical borders and breaks cultural barriers and today, every place where there is a Muslim Mouride, Magal is celebrated. With Senegalese immigration to Brazil and the settlement of these immigrants in Chapecó/SC in the 21st century, we started to experience Magal. Based on the participant research, we briefly describe the great mosque in Touba and the celebration of Magal in Chapecó / SC.
