Abstract

In this work, we aim to analyze some of the feeding practices kept by New Christians in Portuguese America, which are associated to the signs of the Faith of Israel, and, therefore, indicative of Judaic belonging. Our main goal is to identify the role of these practices in the preservation of the Judaic culture, as well as their symbolical meaning. For this purpose, we adopted a descriptive, explanatory research of bibliographic and documental nature. The sources used herein were mainly records of the first two inquisitorial visits that took place in Portuguese America, between 1591 to 1595 and 1618 to 1620. Regarding the main outcomes, we can recognize a symbolical richness passed down from one generation to the next, which went slowly moving further away from its original meaning, although it still preserves important traces of Judaic culture among the Sephardic Jews settled in Brazil.
