Sacra Censura: Santo Ofício e censura intelectual e literária no Império Português

Abstract

The current article occupies itself with the censorship of the Portuguese Inquisition, its systems, methods and agents, from the metropolis to overseas. We weave an analysis about the mechanisms of repression and the surveillance of the deviations and the heterodox potentiality of the heresy germen in the Kingdom through the Holly Office’s action outstandingly on the intellectual and literary control of the Empire, observing the censorial action of the tribunals over the bookish production and over the dilatation and circulation of the knowing, as well as over the universities, schools and libraries, their agents, contents and productions. We occupies ourselves in studying how the Inquisition, complexifying itself bureaucratic and juridically along the time, would systematize and its machine of severity and intolerance, and how it interfered and controlled the Iberic and colonial intellectual products, analyzing also the occurred interactions and collaborations that endorsed the strength of the tribunals of faith in matter of censorship.
