Abstract

Based on an ethnography conducted in the south zone of São Paulo, in this article, I explore my immersion in the prosperity cults of the Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus and analyze the relationship between Pentecostalism and popular entrepreneurship in the light of current literature. I also address the narrative of one of its members and interlocutor of the research; Aparecida is a maid, lives on the outskirts of the city and worked in an upper-middle class gated community. In Universal’s cults, she manages to escape her disappointments and feeds the desire to have her own confectionery business but does not find an answer to family conflicts. The text proposes that these two contemporary phenomena underlie the formation of an imagined collective of outsiders, in which humiliation through subordination refers to the battle against the devil and success, in the form of entrepreneurial outcome, is attributed to the grace of God.
