Abstract

From a theological point of view, predestination is not new to the Reformation, but it has its roots prominently in Saint Augustine. This article aims to analyze the concept of double predestination as written in the Canons of Dort and its developments in later Reformed theology. The central question is to understand whether the Canons of Dort teach active election and reprobation (positive-positive scheme), or active election and passive reprobation (positive-negative scheme). The work has its starting point in the texts of the Canons of Dort, seeking to dialogue with authors of the Reformed Faith. The research results indicate that election is an active-positive act on God's part and reprobation is a passive-negative act. In this sense, predestination is double, but it is not symmetrical.
