Abstract

The construction of the mythical image of candidate Jair Messias Bolsonaro in the year of his first electoral campaign for the presidency and in the election itself (2018) – and, to a lesser extent, in the two previous years (2016 and 2017) – was a central element in the victory of his political project, as well as his popularity in religious circles. Therefore, this article investigates the relationship that united candidate Bolsonaro and religion, and the process of his mythification, through the analysis of documentary and bibliographic data, including reports that deal with the topic, taking into account the impact of this mythical image on the construction of the then candidate's electoral base – with some attention also focused on the period during which he was in office, about the support that the then president received from a representative part of the population. The factors involved in the results of the 2018 election and the role played by evangelical Pentecostal and neo-Pentecostal churches, in conjunction with the use of digital social networks, are significant for a good understanding of the past and present relationship between the religious field and the political field.
