Abstract

Are Brazilian Pentecostal rituals anarchic, loose, or simply governed by another logic? Based on the biblical metaphor of “the wind that blows where it wishes” (John 3:8), we reflect on how Pentecostalism articulate spontaneity, plurality, and symbolic power in their liturgical practices, thus, with the rite of not having a rite. And, even denied, they exist. Based on authors such as Weber, Bourdieu, and Foucault, the text proposes that, more than the absence of a rite, there is here a ritual grammar of its own — flexible, performative, and deeply marked by the Brazilian context.
