Abstract

This article aims to analyze the approaches to gender and sexuality in Allan Kardec's original texts, comparing them with the interpretations, writings and practices of Brazilian Spiritism. To this end, it makes use of a bibliographical review, works published by the founder of the spiritist doctrine in the 19th century, books by prominent Brazilian mediums, such as Chico Xavier and Divaldo Franco, as well as other authors who seek to combine spiritist principles with current scientific knowledge. As a result, there is a diversity of interpretations and practices that generate tension among Spiritists, with the adoption of specific discursive strategies in more traditional views when compared to progressive thoughts within the Brazilian Spiritist movement. While some followers seek to align the doctrine with progressive and scientific characteristics, recognizing the social construction of gender and the normality of sexual diversity, the hegemonic movement maintains more conservative interpretations, based on biologicist discourses and criticism of modern concepts.
