Abstract

This analysis examines intersections between homosexuality/transgender experiences and religion, analyzing how social constructions of gender and sexuality have historically served colonial economic power structures. Using critical examination spanning conceptual definitions to contemporary manifestations of homonationalism, the text argues that religious narratives about sexuality and gender justify and perpetuate structural inequalities. The research prioritized Brazilian scholarship in the study of religions while engaging international literature in gender studies, sociology, anthropology, and history. The text contends that European colonialism imposed binary, heteronormative sexual norms onto cultures that previously recognized diverse gender and sexual identities. These impositions continue to operate through contemporary mechanisms of social and political control.
