Abstract

This article aims to present to those interested in the subject of death, mourning and sacred art how these three aspects come together in intriguing funeral rituals among indigenous peoples of Brazil. First, we will discuss how some indigenous groups of Brazil understand death and dying; then, we will present how these same communities interpret life after death and the idea of the soul; and, finally, we will discuss how funeral rites are experienced by them as artistic and sacred expressions. To this end, we endeavored to conduct a bibliographical analysis on the themes selected here to provide students of religion with an overview of death, funeral rites and indigenous sacred art. To this end, we guided our analysis based on the central works of historian Mircea Eliade (1907-1986).
