Abstract

The ethics of alterity is rooted and sustained in the thought of Kierkegaard, principally in “The works of love” a key text in which “love” is presented as the foundation and form of the second ethic. The intention here is to demonstrate that paradoxically, “love” when transformed into the commandment You must love, on the one hand becomes the statute of a formal ethic built into the commandment to love one’s neighbour as oneself as the complete fulfilment of the law. On the other hand, the impossibility of the validity or establishment of the same statute will be considered, since “love” cannot become the object of its own content; that is, “love” cannot be the captive of an order or duty because it has no prior content. Rather, “love” is constituted as love when works of love are practiced, which practice presupposes the radical abnegation of subjectivity in the recognition that the subject self-constitutes only by becoming a being for the other.
