PLATO AND THE DEMIURGE ROLE'S ON THE GENERATION OF THE COSMIC LIFE
Abstract
This article deals with the conception of Plato – ancient Greek philosopher – about the generation of life, the Cosmos, described, centrally, in his dialogue Timaeus. The essential and distinctive idea of such conception is the introduction of the demiurge in the role of cosmic ordering. The universe is devoid of intelligence and purpose, and thus, mere casual self-generated movement, or there would be an intelligent force responsible for generating and ordering? Criticizing the thesis of so-called “philosophers of nature”, which in general does not point to the action of a divine being intelligent cause and maintainer of the Cosmos, Plato puts into the mouth of the character Timaeus the proposition that the cosmic life is the result of intelligent intervention of a good and beautiful being – the demiurge – on an already given chaotic motion.Downloads
