Abstract

Before belonging to the specific domain of the religious person, the term religio is present, in a general way, in the daily Roman. Used so much in the ambit of the cults of the old Roman religion as designating the new Christian religion, the term religio comes divided among two possible etymologies: one of Christian origin and another of pagan said origin. The present article intends to contemplate about the formation of the religio concept in the Occident and more specifically to analyze the etymologies proposals for Cícero and Lactâncio. The first, when negotiating of the old Roman cults, proposes the term relegere as origin religio etimologic; the second, Lactâncio, to designate the Christian practices, approaches religare religio.
