Abstract

This paper considers the iconography and mythical symbolism of the Temple in Jerusalem both in its original state and in its post-exilic reconstruction, and explores the mythological significance of Jewish sacred art. In the light of this presentation, the author questions the anti-liturgical and iconoclastic approach of certain segments of Protestantism to the sacred space deeming it to be symptomatic of a categorical confusion between ‘iconography’ and ‘idolatry’.
