Resumo

Breeding habits of Cariama cristata were observed in the Getúlio Vargas Zoo-Botanic Park, in Salvador (Bahia State). The nest of the species, composed by dry branches with bottom covered by clay and dry leaves, was constructed by the female in 30 days. The laying included two whitish stained eggs, incubated during 29 days by the female. The only nestling that survived remained in the nest for 30 days. During the next sevenc months, the growth of the young was observed, along with changes in the aspects of plumage coloration and parental care. A brief comment is presented on the vocalization, feeding, and territorial behavior of the species.
