Abstract

The intention of this article is to understand how Brazil's environmental policies and the statements made by President Bolsonaro, his team and Environment Minister Ricardo Salles regarding the environment are reflected in international media. In order to carry out the investigation, several news articles were analyzed in online newspapers that reflect the environmental measures taken by Bolsonaro's government, as well as pronouncements made by the President, Minister Salles and the rest of his government team. It was concluded that international media is endowed with symbolic power in spreading information and events to international society, and that journalism, therefore, has the capacity to generate constraints when stands of international civil society are contrary to the decisions taken by the government. However, in the Brazilian case, this constraint has not yet had an effect, since the President and his government delegation do not change their position of environmental negligence, even when confronted by international media.
