Abstract

This report is the product of a Scientific Initiation research project. In this context, the objective is to discuss the role of educational institutions in implementing a human rights education policy (HRE), based both on the United Nations international agenda and on state national guidelines on the topic. To this end, disparities between discourse and practice are discussed, regarding the valuation of human rights, in educational institutions. Starting from a broad discussion, we emphasize the centrality of the value and practical components (action-oriented education) together with the cognitive component (content) in HRE approach. Furthermore, we offer a research design and a theoretical discussion that can be useful for thinking about studies in relation to the most diverse educational institutions, such as schools and universities. We raise the importance of institutional practice for HRE in the university environment. This discussion is based on the understanding of HRE from a transformative approach, which brings with it the need to critically reflect on sexism and racism rooted in our university structures and how this opposes the construction of a culture of respect for rights human rights and peace at the university level, with repercussions on society as a whole. It concludes by pointing out that the path to be taken towards an HRE is that proposed by Freire, that of an emancipatory education, in which the oppressed can achieve a critical consciousness and free themselves from the oppressor by being the author of their own history
