Abstract

In this work, we analyse the applying of land legislation in 1850, in Província de São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul. Our timeline comprises the years 1850 and 1880 – from the promulgation of the Law to the period in which most legitimation processes were created. These processes resulted in the colonization progress and mate tea exploitation. The spread of land borders on forests increased the number of litigations among landowners to solve problems of land rights. However, the old means used by landowners remained as one of the strategies used to face land disputes.
