Abstract

In a markedly male universe a name stands out in the Middle Ages of the twelveth century: Hildegard of Bingen visionary / Abbess / nun's. A singular personality who was born in 1098 in the town of Bermersheim, near Mainz and died on September 17, 1179. At that time it was common for parents to send their children to study in the monasteries that were in the area. Hildegard was sent to the convent when she was seven or eight years old, where she learnt the rudiments of Latin through reading and singing of Psalms. Although she had had visions since the age of eight, Hildegard only expressed them publicly after she was 40. Besides the mystical visions, she was responsible for two very realistic treaty: Physica, which was a classification of many elements of the natural world such as plants, animals, birds, fish, including precious stones and metals; And the other treaty, known as Cause et curiae, was about physiological issues, mixing the fascinating science, as it was known until that time, to the symbolic applications and a common sense based on observing the facts. Hildegard also composed several liturgical songs.
